The
Activist's Handbook : A Primer for the 1990s and Beyond The keyword in the title is "handbook". This book has detailed examples of popular struggles in the US in a wide variety of areas: affordable housing, crime prevention, ecology, AIDS and more. Each chapter presents a different perspective of popular struggles, mainly through examples and generalizations, detailed analysis and conclusions. Most of the cases presented are from the last 20 years so they are easily identifiable. Why it is a handbook? because it treats examples of successful campaigns as well as those that ended up in total defeat... and anything in between. The goal is to learn from experience: not only what to do --which strategies are winners-- but also from failures. |

The
Case For Animal Rights This book accomplishes two goals: First, it is one of the best available discussions of the many aspects of animal welfare. Second, it is an excellent example of a fine philosophical mind grappling with a difficult issue. But reader beware--do not look for simple answers or slogans here. This is difficult reading indeed, but Regan has, better than anyone else (and this is characteristic of all his writing)carefully worked through the many arguments, objections, counter-examples, etc., with thoroughness and clarity unapproached by similar books. If you recognize that the question "Do non-human animals have rights?" is extraordinarily complex and thereby can produce only complex answers, then this is THE book for you. |

For A New America Every so often a book comes along which has the capacity to awaken the conscience of a nation. Silent Spring was one such book: I believe John Robbins volume is destined to be another. With consummate intelligence, thoroughness and skill, Robbins takes us on a multifaceted journey which should cause all sensitive people to question their eating habits most searchingly. I couldnt put it down. review by: Cleveland Amory, President, Fund for Animals, Author, The Cat Who Came for Christmas

Ethics
into Action : Henry Spira and the Animal Rights Movement How can one person make the world a better place? Henry Spira's extraordinary life as an activist shows that an individual can make a difference. By thinking about how giant corporations might be vulnerable, he found ways to change their practices and save the lives and health of animals all over the United States. Spira has led Revlon, Avon, and other cosmetics companies to change their testing procedures so that the words "not tested on animals" now appear on most cosmetic products - and are true. He stopped bizarre sex experiments on cats at a famous American museum, saved millions of American cattle from having their faces scorched with hot iron brands, and saved even larger numbers of animals from pointless drug testing. This book tells the inspiring story of a lifelong activist whose creativity and careful thought set the standard for the animal rights movement in the twentieth century. |

Mad
Cowboy : Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat When former cattle rancher Howard Lyman appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 to share his insider view of the danger of Mad Cow Disease spreading to this country, his revelations about the beef industry prompted a group of Texas cattlemen to file a lawsuit charging Lyman and the talk show host with "food disparagement." That wasn't enough to silence Howard Lyman, and in this stirring account of his journey from meat-loving cowboy to vegetarian environmental activist, he tells the whole truth about the catastrophic consequences of an animal-based diet. |

The
Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory An excellent book! In tracing oppression to its source, it is good to compare the oppressions of two or more separate groups, in this case women and non-human animals. The author uses a very intellectual approach, and some parts need to be read more than once for complete understanding (at least by me!), but the arguments are sound and the conclusions revealing. |
